- Sounds like a "stiction" problem?!?!?!?

- Do you hear the spindle motor of the hard drive spin up???? Sounds
- even more like a "stiction" problem if you don't.

- This means that power is being supplied to the circuit board of the
- hard drive, but sounds like the motor is not spinning. So, obviously,
- the computer won't be able to find and data on it (access it).

- Yep, that definitely sound like "stiction". You're probably wondering
- what that is, right? As drives get older, some of them have some
- sort of lubrication in them, for the spindle motor, that gets stiff with
- age. This in combination with "motor fatigue" causes the drive not to
- be able to spin up the platters without first breaking/loosening up
- the lubrication. You procedure of multiple reboots does this.
- Eventually, the HD motor is finally able to get the disk platters going
- and boots it up.
-
- The fix for this is to buy a new hard drive. If you can't afford it,
- then about the only other option is to fire up the computer and leave
- it on 24 hours a day so the lubrication does not have a chance to
- stiffen up again. Make sure you have a good cooling system in the
- computer.

- Sounds like the SCSI is working fine, since you can use the CD-ROM.
- It's most likely the Quantum problem I described above.
